Muslim faithful from Wajir on Sunday celebrated their Idd without the usual pomp and colour.

This year’s celebration comes during the threat of Covid-19 that resulted in the closure of mosques.

Previously, muslims would throng grounds across the town for the prayers, but on Sunday not a single person was allowed in the grounds.

Families celebrated at home, following the government’s directive discouraging gatherings and to observe social distance.

At the Orahey ground, there was nobody in sight, only police officers on patrol.

Local administrators were also tasked with the responsibility of ensuring government orders are implemented.

Wajir county commissioner Jacob Narengo urged Muslims to remain disciplined even after Ramadhan and continue following the health guidelines put in place by the government.

Mohamed Abdi, a resident, said on a normal day, he would be inviting his Christian friends to join him in the celebration at his home, but that could not happen this year.

Governor Mohamed Abdi had  a message of hope for residents and Kenyans at large.

“It is an open secret that this disease has affected us badly. Our people are suffering greatly. Our economy has taken a beating. Families are struggling to put food on the table following loss of jobs. But amid all this, God will see us through. Kenyans are also resilient,” he said.

Supkem chairman Wajir Branch Adan Yunis urged the government to allow the re-opening of worshiping places.

“I want to urge the government through the Ministry of Interior to let us form some committees that will oversee the implementation of the Health ministry’s guild lines on combating Covid-19,” he said.
