Politician and pilot Faith Nguthu /HANDOUT
Faith Nguthu, a commercial pilot and emerging political figure, has officially joined the increasingly crowded race for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election.
Nguthu unveiled her bid under the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, positioning herself as a fresh face seeking to challenge seasoned politicians and public figures who have already declared interest in succeeding incumbent Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris.
Speaking during the launch of her campaign, Nguthu said her decision to seek office was motivated by the need to encourage more professional women to participate in leadership and governance.
She challenged women to be bold in pursuing leadership opportunities rather than waiting to be handed positions by political parties or influential individuals.
“If women are not given a seat at the decision-making table, they must break the table,” Nguthu declared.
The pilot said Nairobi requires leaders who understand the challenges facing ordinary residents and are prepared to offer practical solutions, particularly for young people and women seeking economic opportunities.
Nguthu outlined an ambitious agenda centred on youth empowerment, digital innovation and entrepreneurship.
She pledged to establish localised digital resource centres and entrepreneurship training programmes aimed at helping young people build sustainable livelihoods in the digital economy.
“We must prepare our young people for the future by giving them the tools, skills and opportunities to thrive in a rapidly changing economy,” she said.
Her campaign launch attracted a sizeable number of youth and Gen Z activists, a constituency she hopes to mobilise as part of her support base.
Her entry adds a new dimension to a race already featuring a
mix of experienced politicians, activists and public personalities.
Among those who have publicly declared interest in the seat is former nominated senator Millicent Omanga, who is making another attempt after unsuccessfully challenging Passaris in the 2022 election.
Nominated senator Karen Nyamu has also expressed confidence in her chances and indicated that she intends to seek the seat in 2027.
Other names being mentioned in the contest include nominated senator Tabitha Mutinda, whose grassroots networks across Nairobi could bolster her prospects, and nominated senator Crystal Asige, whose advocacy for persons living with disabilities has earned her national recognition.
Outside mainstream politics, activist Hanifa Adan has been linked to the race following her visibility in civic and governance campaigns, while blogger and social commentator Maverick Aoko has also been mentioned as a potential contender.
With more aspirants expected to join the race, the battle for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat is already emerging as one of the most closely watched contests ahead of the 2027 General Election.
