Worker dies after falling from sixth floor in Eastleigh

Victim slid, fell on his back and died on the spot.

A 21-year-old casual labourer died after falling from the sixth floor of a building he and others were constructing in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

Police and witnesses said John Ngungu was busy at the site when he slid and fell. He died on the spot Wednesday at about 1pm along General Mathenge Road.

The body was moved moved to the mortuary.

Construction accidents have been increasing, with calls to improve the safety gear of workers and to make the sites safer with mesh barriers to prevent such falls.

Officials from National Construction Authority visited the scene and directed work be stopped for investigations.

Elsewhere, a passenger train struck and killed a 25-year-old woman in Dandora, Nairobi.

The train on Wednesday was ferrying passengers to the city centre when Evelyn Akuku was crossing the tracks.

Police are investigating.

In South B, Nigerian national Oluwatosin Akiwamum, 37,was found dead in his bed. Foam was in his mouth. The cause of death has not been established but police said they recovered bottles of alcohol in the house.

The body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy.

Police are investigating the alleged lynching of a man by stoning. He allegedly was riding a stolen motorcycle in Kayole. He was with another man.

Other boda boda riders chased him for about three kilometres. They corned him and stoned him to death.

Lynchings have been increasing.

Police term mob lynching criminal and always call on those behind them to surrender the suspects to authorities.

"Mob lynching is criminal,"  Nairobi police boss James Mugera said.

According to statistics, at least one mob-lynching  is reported to police in Kenya daily.
