Gender and Public Service CAS Beatrice Elachi is headed to the courts to sue the Nairobi County Assembly for defamation.

Elachi said the assembly has continued to tarnish her name despite her willingly leaving the institution 14 months ago.

On August 11, 2020, she left the Assembly by resigning as Speaker noting that she was moving on to a new season in her political career.

“I’m suing the assembly because the matters were discussed on the floor of the house,"

“I have asked my lawyers to go to court for defamation. This is the third time the county assembly of Nairobi has discussed me on defamation and not truth and I will not allow this to continue,” she told the Star today.

“I’m suing the assembly because the matters were discussed on the floor of the House."

WITCH-HUNT CLAIMS

The former Speaker explained that the assembly is operating on a witch-hunt mode, accusing her of all sorts of alleged illegalities.

On Tuesday, the assembly adopted a report that recommended investigative bodies to probe Elachi for violation of the law and abuse office by usurping the powers of the County Assembly Service Board where she served as a chairperson board.

In its finding, the report suggested that promotion and recruitments of staff that took place in 2020 during Elachi’s tenure were against the law and were declared null and void.

However, Elachi defended herself and noted that it was pure malice for the assembly to call her ‘rogue' as she was finishing a promotion process initiated by the late Alex Magelo who was her predecessor.

“Never has it been on record that I stole money while I was the Speaker. Everything I did is on record and It was not Elachi as a person but as the chairperson of the county assembly board. This is pure malice,” Elachi added.

According to the former Speaker, one of the accusations by the assembly include conducting plastic surgery with public money.

Back in September 2018, the assembly claimed that the former Speaker spent Sh1.5 million and travelled to the US for plastic and knee surgery by using public funds.

She was also accused of having bought an honorary degree from a non-existent Commonwealth University.

“ The assembly alleged I used public money for plastic surgery. Now let them be ready to give the evidence to the courts because I filed everything from videos and documents since I know the kind of people I’m dealing with,” Elachi stated.
