A 29-year-old man committed suicide by drinking poison in Umoja estate after his wife left him.

Police say the man’s wife had quit their marriage after an argument, despite his pleadings that she does not desert him.

The man, later wrote a text to his estranged wife saying he had "left her the world".

The woman told police she tried to call and text him but there was no response.

She returned to the house with her brother-in-law the next day and found his body on the bed.

Police said the man had taken an unidentified poison. The body was taken to a mortuary.

Buruburu police boss Kamau Ngugi said they are investigating the case as a suicide.

Cases of suicides have been increasing, especially in domestic situations, and authorities blame depression and other mental distress.

In 2020, 174 cases of suicide were reported; 196 in 2019, 302 in 2018, 421 in 2017 and 302 in 2016. Most victims were male.

Two knives were found on the body.
