Scene of crime

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is investigating the murder of a businessman in Kayole, Nairobi.

Julius Muteti, 43, was shot dead by unknown assailants at around 7pm on Friday, shortly after he closed his M-Pesa shop at Nyando stage.

Kayole subcounty police commander Henry Kosgei said the killers escaped with an unknown amount of money. Muteti’s mobile phone and identification documents were recovered from the scene.

“The man was shot by his attackers while he was on his way home shortly after closing his M-Pesa shop,” Kosgei said.

Insecurity in most parts of the city has surged, especially since the government introduced the dusk-to-dawn curfew to combat the spread of Covid-19.

Kayole residents said they live in fear of attacks by criminal gangs who have been terrorising them since the curfew was introduced.

"We have criminals who pretend to be police officers, thereby terrorising members of the public during curfew hours. Most of us now live in fear of the thugs,” said a resident, who requested not to be named for fear of victimisation.

The residents said Muteti’s murder was the third incident in the area this month. The trader is said to have been attacked by three gangsters who are still at large.

According to police sources, there were signs of struggles during the robbery, leading to the fatality. The body was taken to the City Mortuary, awaiting postmortem and interment.

Muteti’s brother, Mwema Muteti, and his wife, Selah Nzilani, expressed concern that young people had turned brutal and resorted to killing for money.

A month has barely elapsed since four criminals were gunned down by detectives in Buruburu, Nairobi, on May 13. A police officer was wounded in the incident at Mowlem on Kangundo Road.

Buruburu subcounty police boss Adamson Bungei said the officers had been trailing the gangsters for days. He said the four had been harassing Umoja, Komarock, Dandora and Buruburu residents.

“We have been pursuing them. Our officers ambushed the four on Kangundo Road this morning. Police flagged down the vehicle they were in, but the four gangsters jumped out of the vehicle and started shooting at the officers," he told the Star by phone.

"The gangsters were felled in the ensuing shootout,” he said, adding, “One of our officers was shot in the thigh.  He is in stable condition at a city hospital.”

The police found two pistols and 13 bullets at the scene. The ownership of the vehicle used by the gangsters is being investigated, the Buruburu police chief said.
