Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a woman's death in Athi River, Machakos County.
The woman is said to have died on the spot after she was hit by a lorry along the Devki–Makadara Road at about 3 am on Thursday.
She was reportedly on her way home from work along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway in the Devki area and was in the company of a female friend when the incident occurred.
The matter was reported at Athi River Police Station as a road traffic accident.
The body was moved to Shalom Community Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Independent sources told the Star that the woman and her friend were riding on a motorcycle when the incident occurred.
However, that account has been questioned by some people familiar with the matter, who alleged that neither the rider nor the friend was reported injured.
The sources alleged that it was a hit-and-run incident.
Athi River Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Michael Boiyo said police had opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.
"We have opened an inquiry into the circumstances that led to her death after receiving intelligence information that the same might not be a normal road traffic accident," Boiyo told the Star by phone on Saturday.
Boiyo said investigators had recorded several statements.
He said neither the lorry nor its driver had been traced by the time of publication and that investigators were pursuing leads to establish what happened.
In a separate incident, police have launched investigations into a robbery reported in Matungulu, Machakos.
