One person has died in a road traffic accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Machakos county.

Police said the tuk-tuk driver died on the spot after the vehicle was hit by a trailer from behind near the Crystal Rivers estate on the outskirts of Athi River Township.

The fatal accident involved three motor vehicles and a tuk-tuk. The vehicles included a minibus belonging to Wamasaa Executive Shuttle, Isuzu FRR lorry and a trailer that were all moving towards the Mombasa general direction from Nairobi during the incident.

The matter was reported to Athi River police station as a fatal injury road traffic accident incident at 1 am.

"The accident occured yesterday February 10, 2026 at 2300hrs along Nairobi-Mombasa highway near Crystal Rivers estate involving three motor vehicles and a tuk-tuk," police stated in a report seen by the Star.

"It happened that all the motor vehicles were being driven from Nairobi heading to the Mombasa general direction and on reaching at the location of the accident, the minibus overtook the tuk-tuk which was ahead of it and cut in to enter the stage forcing the tuk-tuk lose control while trying to avoid being hit and rolled on the right side of the road. Police said the lorry also lost control after hitting the tuk-tuk and overturned on the right side of the road. It hit another motor vehicle, a trailer that was in front of it.

The tuk-tuk driver sustained severe head injuries as a result of the impact and died on the spot.

Traffic officers from Athi River police station responded to the scene and processed it.

They removed the body to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary where it is preserved awaiting a postmortem. The three motor vehicles and tuk-tuk were towed to the same police station where they have since been impounded awaiting inspection.
