Police are investigating an incident where a man was found dead in Athi River, Machakos county.

Sammy Mutisya Michael’s lbody was discovered lying in a mattress on the floor of his rented single-room house at the Makongeni village in Kinanie location within Athi River sub county on Sunday. Mutisya is said to be 31 years of age.

The matter was reported to the Athi River police station as a sudden death incident report hours after it occurred.

A police officer privy to the incident said the matter was reported to the station by the building’s caretaker.

The building's caretaker told the officers that they discovered the man’s body after responding to other tenants’ concerns of a strange smell that was emanating from the man’s house. 

“It was reported by the caretaker of the building within the Makongeni village in Kinanie area that today tenants from the said building started complaining to him that there was some bad smell emanating from house number six within the building,” the cop told the Star on Sunday.

The officer confided to the Star since he isn’t commissioned to speak to the press.

“Musyoka reported that he responded to the tenants’ concerns by going to check on the said house at around 6.30pm only to discover that it was locked from inside,” he added.

The caretaker reportedly managed to open the house’s window only to discover that Mutisya who was lying prone down on a mattress was dead.

The matter was reported to the Athi River police station prompting the officers’ quick response to the scene.

The officers from Athi River police station who visited the scene were accompanied by Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives attached to the same station led by an orderly officer.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased might have been sick since some medication packets were found in the said house.

The scene was processed and documented by the Scenes of Crime personnel and body removed to a mortuary awaiting an autopsy.

The DCI detectives have launched a probe into the incident.
