Traders and residents in Mavoko have welcomed the start of construction of a new shed at Athi River open‑air market.

The long‑overdue project, they say, will transform the bustling trading hub and create a more conducive environment for business.

For years, traders have endured harsh conditions, selling their goods under the blazing sun and pouring rain.

Now, with the county government breaking ground on a shed that will host over 120 traders, many are hopeful for better days ahead.

“The ongoing construction of this shed is a blessing in disguise. We hope it will be completed as quickly as possible to spur growth at Athi River market,” said Shantel Muema, a trader who has worked at the market for more than a decade.

“It’s long overdue. We’ve been exposed to the elements for years, making it challenging for both traders and customers.”

Athi River market is a popular destination for buyers and sellers from across the region, including Nairobi, Kajiado and Kiambu counties.

Its stalls brim with fresh vegetables, fruit, and other farm produce, feeding hundreds of people every day.

James Omollo, a regular customer, said many people travel long distances to shop at the market.

“I have friends from as far as Kiambu who come here to buy goods. The shed will be a huge boost for both traders and customers,” he said.

The project, spearheaded by the administration of Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, was officially launched on Wednesday.

Athi River MCA Jeremiah Kaloi, who is also the Trade Committee chair in the county assembly, expressed optimism about its impact.

“I was honoured to preside over the ground‑breaking for this new market shed. It’s a big step towards supporting our traders and strengthening the local economy,” Kaloi said.

“The shed will benefit about 120 traders, providing a safe and sheltered environment for doing business. Thanks to Governor Wavinya Ndeti for empowering our local traders to grow and thrive.”

Kaloi added that the project had long been requested by traders, many of whom have suffered significant losses due to harsh weather.

“Fresh vegetables, onions, fruits, and tomatoes often spoil when exposed to the sun and rain. We acted on the public outcry and decided to build this shed as a starting point. More sheds will be constructed in other markets across the county in the future,” he said.

“Our people pay taxes, and it is our duty to create a conducive environment for them to do business. This is just the beginning,” he added.

With construction set to be completed within a month, Athi River market is poised for a brighter future — one that benefits both traders and customers alike.
