Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports CS, Salim Mvurya, has announced  major upgrades for Meru Stadium.

This is after he conducted an inspection of Meru Stadium on Thursday, May 22, 2025 and directed the start of comprehensive upgrades to the facility.

In his official X account, Mvurya noted that the upgrades will include the installation of a high-quality playing surface, high-mast floodlights, a modern digital scoreboard, spectator seating and other essential auxiliary facilities.

“The contractor will also undertake restoration works for the DCC office and the police station within the stadium’s vicinity,” he added.

These upgrades are aimed at enhancing the overall sports infrastructure in Kenya and contributing to long-term sports development, including talent development, youth integration and a vibrant sports ecosystem.

Additionally, he emphasised that elevating Meru Stadium to international standards will not only provide a platform for hosting national and international tournaments.

“The stadium will also create meaningful opportunities for our youth while promoting the economy of the region,” he explained.

On April 17, 2025, Mvurya announced that the government will, within the next six months, invest Sh800 million to convert the Ithookwe showground into an international stadium.

Mvurya visited the site, on the outskirts of Kitui town, which is earmarked to host this year’s national Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20.

President William Ruto will grace the event

Moreover, Governor Julius Malombe gave the Sports CS an inspection tour of the site that traditionally hosts the Kitui County Agricultural Show.

“This stadium will have a capacity of 10,000 people. We are constructing it to international standards,” Mvurya told the media.

The CS had given out the projected timelines, saying the tender would be advertised on Tuesday next week and work would continue until October.

“We have a deadline; we have the function here by October 20. Therefore, we have to complete the stadium before Mashujaa Day,” he noted.

“So, around October 10, we should be asking the contractor to hand over the finished project.”

He clarified that the stadium was not being done for the sole purpose of hosting Mashujaa Day, adding that thereafter, the facility would be used for other activities.
