The Standard Media Group has addressed a distressing incident in which an employee threatened to end his life in the event that he was not paid his salary arrears.

In a statement, the Group said it has addressed the issues of the journalist identified as Zanji Mukenya, who it said was on sabbatical.

"Following the incident, we were able to address the freelancer's immediate needs," it said.

In a video circulating on social media, Mukenya is heard saying he would leave the Standard Group premises in two ways, with his money or dead.

"Hopefully you guys see this when I'm still alive. I'm leaving here with my money or with my life in their hands," he is heard saying.

Mukenya alleges that SG had refused to pay him.

In its statement, the Group said the incident "has profoundly affected us, and we want to express our sincere empathy and concern for our colleague".

Standard Media Group acknowledged the severe impact that the delay in payments has had, especially given the challenging financial circumstances that the company is navigating.

The Group assured that it remains fully committed to addressing and resolving all outstanding salary arrears and ensuring that pay is current.

"We are working diligently to provide support to our employees during this difficult time. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to work through these challenges," it said.

The Group advised employees to reach out for any support they may need.
