Residents from the Ukuu area in Imenti South constituency Meru County have benefited from a Sh.5 million dispensary project fully funded by Kenya Pipeline Company.

According to Faith Mwiti, a resident, the facility will be of very much help because they used to travel a very long distance to access a health facility.

“We are forced to go to either Nkubu or Meru towns to seek medical services which is costly. Nkubu is about 10 kilometers and Meru is about 30 kilometers,” Mwiti said.

She called on the Kenya Pipeline Company and any other company or organization to assist the said facility with a maternity wing as most of the expectant mothers suffer a lot when seeking delivery services.

“Expectant mothers are the ones that suffer most accessing health facilities and some of them deliver their babies on the roadside so if a maternity wing is put up in the amenity it will be of great help to the community,” Mwiti said.

Joyce Wanjiku the nurse in charge of the said dispensary said that as staff, they are happy now that the community will be able to access health services nearer.

She echoed sentiments made by Mwiti on the need to have a fully equipped maternity block in the facility.

Ukuu Location chief Dorothy Kinyua thanked Kenya Pipeline for the facility saying that the dispensary has come at the right time as the area is highly populated.

“The residents are used to going to either Kanyakine, Nkubu or Meru or other private hospitals to get medical services which is quite costly so the people are very happy,” the chief said.

The area chief also appealed for the well-wishers to partner with the Meru County government and construct a maternity block to serve expectant mothers from the area and its environs.

She said pregnant mothers suffer to get to health facilities especially during the rainy season.

She also appealed to the Meru County government to assist the facility with an oncologist as cases of cancer are becoming rampant in the area.
