The Kenya Ports Authority has donated food items worth Sh1.5 million to vulnerable Muslims observing fast during Ramadhan.

The food will benefit families in Mombasa, Kwale and Lamu.

Addressing the media at the authority’s headquarters in Mombasa,

KPA Managing director William Ruto said that the donation underscores KPA’s commitment to support Muslims.

“This donation is a symbol of our commitment to stand with our community members to ensure no one goes hungry,” Ruto said.

He said Muslims are reminded of the importance of empathy, kindness and unity during Ramadhan.

“We all know Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year for the Muslims. It is a time of reflection, sacrifice and devotion through prayers and fasting.”

“Ramadan is also an occasion where Muslims reaffirm their commitment to helping the less fortunate and this is where we also come in as KPA. We know there are people struggling because of economic hardship and inequality,” Ruto said.

The food items were received by Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims national vice chairperson, Sheikh Muhdar.

Muhdar praised KPA's noble gesture and urged other organisations to emulate the corporation.

“This is a very important function that inculcates friendship and brotherhood. We extend our sincere gratitude to KPA and the management for continuing with the tradition laid down by previous regimes,” he said.

“We are grateful for what KPA has continued to do for the Muslims every year during the holy month of Ramadan. This is one way of showing unity,” said Council of Imams and Preachers Kenya Mombasa branch, Sheikh Mohamed Shaban.

“We shall continue praying to Allah to bless KPA and its management to continue helping communities.”

Muslims began their fast on March 8 and are expected to end next week on Wednesday by celebrating Eid Il Fitr.
