The government has announced heightened patrols to arrest bandits who shot and killed a Form 3 girl who was on her way home in Isiolo town.

The school girl was travelling home in a bus that was ambushed by the 10 bandits.

Isiolo county commissioner Geoffrey Omoding directed elders to work closely with police officers to arrest the bandits believed to be from a neighbouring county.

Herders said they saw the bandits fetch water from an earth-dam before attacking the bus near Gotu area.

Omoding urged community members to tip authorities about to enhance security.

"They (attackers) are being pursued while investigations into the motive of the attack continue," he said.

He fingered Nyumba Kumi elders sympathising with the bandits saying they are derailing security efforts in the area.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed in the area.

Patrols have also been increased on all roads plying Merti, Garbatula and Marsabit routes.

Omoding said 70 camels stolen a week ago have been recovered and security officers are still pursuing the remaining 35.

He said the government has acquired drones and armoured vehicles to deal with insecurity.

Omoding urged parents to be on the lookout for their children during holidays saying some young boys are being recruited into crimes.
