Machakos County Education executive Philip Mutua Kilonzo has been sacked.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti announced the sacking through a press release circulated to media houses on Monday, October 9, 2023, citing an untenable performance by Kilonzo as the reason for his sacking.
“I have today terminated with immediate effect the contract of Hon Philip Mutua Kilonzo currently serving as the County Executive Committee Member (CEC-M) for Education,” the press statement signed by the governor dated October 9, 2023, reads in part.
“I have reviewed his performance and come to the conclusion that it is untenable for him to continue holding office as CEC-M. This decision has been informed by the need to uphold high standards of service delivery to the people of Machakos County.
"We sincerely thank the CECM for his service in County leadership since his appointment into office. I hereby, with immediate effect reassign CECM Roads, Transport and Public Works Hon Dr Consolata Mutisya to the Department of Education."
This leaves the Department of Roads, Transport and Public Works without a substantive CEC-M. It is not clear when the governor is likely to fill up the position.
Ndeti’s move to crack the whip on the high-ranking official comes barely a month after executing a cabinet reshuffle that saw several county executives and chief officers moved.
Kilonzo had hardly settled in the Education docket from that of Lands, Housing, Urban Development and Energy where he was initially appointed.
He becomes the second county executive to exit Ndeti’s cabinet after the former Youth, Sports and Gender CEC-M Onesmus Muasya tendered his resignation to ‘pursue other interests.’
