Police in Mlolongo, Machakos county are holding 40 riders after 69 motorbikes were impounded in the area on Tuesday evening.

Athi River East subcounty police commander Anderson Mbae said the lot was arrested during a routine operation to ensure sanity on the roads.

“We impounded 69 motorbikes and arrested 40 operators. They will be arraigned in Mavoko Law Courts for traffic-related offences,” Mbae told the Star on Wednesday.

Mbae said the joint operations were conducted by officers from both Mlolongo and Mavoko SNP police stations both located within the Athi River East subcounty police command.

“There have been reported cases of goons operating on motorbikes to attack innocent people in their plots,” Mbae said.

He said most of the motorbikes used by bodaboda operators have no compliance documents to be on our roads.

The police boss said the suspects had been detained at Mlolongo and Mavoko SNP police stations.

“I urge all bodaboda operators to ensure they have all documents required to be on our roads and desist from engaging or being misused for criminal activities,” Mbae said.

Mbae said as law enforcement authorities, they will support the sector to operate in a conducive environment as long as they maintain law and order.

“But, we won’t bury our heads in the sand as bodaboda operators are used for criminal activities.  They should adhere to all laws that govern their business,” Mbae said.
