At least 35,392 households in Isiolo are set to benefit as the county government on Friday flagged off relief food.
The food aid is for mitigating biting hunger as a result of the ravaging drought affecting most parts of Isiolo County
Deputy Governor James Lowasa who presided over the event announced the relief food will be distributed in two phases.
In the first phase, seven wards; Cherab, Cahri , Wabera, Bulapesa, Sericho, Garba Tula, and Kinna will receive rice and cooking oil.
Each household in the seven wards will receive 5kg of rice and 1 liter of cooking oil.
In Cherab, 5,295 households will benefit, Chari (1,115), Wabera (3,353), Bulpesa (2,775), Sericho (4,459), GarbaTula (3,662) and Kinna (2,802).
"Recent challenges linked to climate change and the high cost of living have made access to food impossible for the majority of households in ASAL counties like Isiolo," Lowasa said.
The DG described his boss ( Governor Guyo) as passionate and caring as this is the 3rd phase of the food distribution exercise to cushion the community in the last six months.
The county speaker Assembly Mohamed Roba hailed the launch assuring Governor Guyo that the assembly will work very closely to deliver on his campaign pledges.
"It's time to work together as leaders and shun divisive politics to address a myriad of the challenges faced by our community," he said.
In addition, DG Lowasa noted that the hunger situation for most households in the Sub-County had reached alarming levels and the food will cushion the residents as the Government mitigates other means.
The distribution came at a time when the locals are observing the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
“As the holy month of Ramadhan comes to an end, I believe you’ll be fasting under conditions that have been drastically affected by climate change causing unreliable rainfall and drought, it has not only affected our County but the whole country. I’m positive that the Government will stand by all those affected by this calamity,” Lowasa added.
