Kenya Kwanza politicians in Embu have contributed Sh1 million in a funds drive to compensate Shauri market fire victims whose businesses were destroyed last week.
While speaking during the Wednesday event at the market, gubernatorial aspirant Cecily Mbarire said once elected, her government will invest in disaster management to ensure people don't incur losses through preventable incidents.
"When it comes to disaster management, you have to ensure you are fully prepared always," she said.
Mbarire said her government will ensure there is a change in how things are conducted in the county to ensure such incidents don't occur. "We have to embrace change failure to which we will forever keep suffering."
The nominated legislator also criticised the county health sector for not doing enough to assist residents receive quality health services.
She said the residents have been forced to seek health services in the neighbouring counties.
Cecily Mbarire was accompanied by her running mate Kinyua Mugo, Manyatta MP candidate Gitonga Mukunji, Kirimari ward candidate Ibrahim Swaleh and other leaders.
The leaders also delivered Deputy President William Ruto's contribution of Sh500,000 during the fundraiser.
The funds will be used to compensate 190 victims who lost their businesses through a fire tragedy that occurred during the clashes between the police and boda boda operators on Friday last week.
The witnesses said the fire was caused by an astray tear gas canister that landed on one of the workshops in the market.
