Persons with disability in Meru have accused the county of neglect and discrimination.

Meru PWDs chairperson Mike Makarina said they are denied equal opportunities in appointments and government tenders.

“It is hard for a person without any disability to understand hardships and challenges PWDs face,” he said at Buuri East deputy county commissioner's office on Wednesday.

"A PWD will effectively understand their own thus the need to employ them in offices handling their issues."

Makarina said they have not been receiving their share of the cash transfers for persons with severe disability.

He urged the government to investigate.

“I intend to move to court to petition the same in the next two weeks if no action is taken against the officials handling funds for PWDs from the national government,” Makarina said.

But Governor Kiraitu Murungi says his government is doing a lot for PWDs.

Last week, he said his administration has initiated programmes for PWDs, donated mobility assistive devices and set up a Sacco with Sh10 million seed capital.

Kiraitu said his government will start offering free treatment to all PWDs after issuing them with cards to access health services.

“My administration is fully committed to support, protect and empower PWDs. We uphold their rights,” he said during International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebrations in Buuri on December 3.

Social Development executive Linner Nkirote said they are destroying the culture ofPWDs begging in the streets.

“Government and KCB Foundation are offering training to PWDs on how to run business and make a profit. Soon all government offices will be built to be PWD friendly," she said.

She said together with the national government, they are issuing NHIF cards to all PWDs.
