Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi’s downfall is eminent in 2022, South Imenti MP Kathuri Murungi has said.

Kathuri said Kiraitu should concentrate on fighting his own battles and build his dwindling governorship fortunes and stop trying to dethrone him from the seat in 2022.

“Go tell Kiraitu to exercise caution before uttering sentiments that can cost his governor’s seat in 2022. He has a big challenge to reclaim the seat. I warn him to seek votes before declaring support for his close men. He may lose his seat and Kamashinani (Kathuri's nickname) retains,” Kathuri said yesterday while awarding 80 teams that participated in his constituency football league.

Kiraitu is facing stiff competition from former governor Peter Munya and Woman Rep Kawira Mwangaza.

Kawira, with her Okolea Kaana Ka Meru initiative, identifies herself with the vulnerable and the elderly in society by donating basic needs, blankets, umbrellas and in anti-jiggers fight.

Kathuri castigated Kiraitu who on Saturday asked residents to elect an MP loyal to him signalling his support for his chief of staff Gideon Kimathi.

Kimathi has fronted himself as Kathuri's main challenger in 2022.

“I plead with people of South Imenti to elect an MP who will work closely with me to develop the constituency,” Kiraitu said.

However, Kathuri said no leader has the powers to impose a candidate to the electorate.

“It is God who chooses leaders to represent his people. In 2013, Kiraitu campaigned against me but God declared that South Imenti will be led by Kathuri. In 2017, he campaigned for another candidate but God stood with me. God can even strengthen and favour me to a point of dethroning you as a governor,” Kathuri said.

He said he has not blocked Kiraitu from bringing development in South Imenti.

“I believe I have carried my mandate well and initiated development in every village in this constituency to a point of being ranked the best MP in Mt Kenya East and Meru and number seven countrywide. Those saying I have connections, must learn to give credit where it's due,” Kathuri said.
