Residents of Mwingi and its environs have been urged to stay away from the town to help in the war on Covid-19.
The town has two confirmed cases of the disease.
Kitui Deputy Governor Wathe Nzau told those living in rural areas to avoid travelling to Mwingi town. He reminded residents that the coronavirus is a global threat, hence they should be cautious to avoid contracting it.
Nzau said everybody must adhere to measures and guidelines issued by the Health ministry to avoid the spread of the disease to the villages. He spoke on Monday moments before a fumigation drive was launched in the town.
The county is disinfecting all social places. Also targeted are health facilities, including the Mwingi Level 4 Hospital and staff quarters for nurses.
Kitui Tourism, Sports and Culture executive Patrick Koki, who presided over the launch, pleaded with residents to help the authorities in contact tracing so those who have interacted with the two patients can be quarantined.
The county has two quarantine centres at Kauwi Level 4 Hospital and Kenya Medical Training Centre in Kitui town.
“We've traced 20 contacts who are currently in quarantine and we are urging residents to offer information of any other contact,” Koki said.
He urged residents to present themselves to health facilities whenever they experience symptoms related to Covid-19.
Mwingi Central MCA, Mary Kanini urged parents to ensure children stay at home and avoid town to combat the spread of the virus.
“Ensure children stay home to avoid the spread of the disease as it does not spare children either,” Kanini cautioned.
Kanini termed it careless for people to go to town when they have no business being there.
