The initiative, implemented in partnership with the national government, seeks to ensure no student sits the exams on an empty stomach.
It targets candidates sitting the Grade 6 (KPSEA), Grade 9 (KJSEA) and KCSE examinations across the county.
At least 2,000
bags of rice and beans, each weighing 50 kilogrammes, will be distributed to
schools under the programme.
Speaking during the flag-off at the Kwale cereals board in Matuga, Chidzuga said the initiative was inspired by her own humble background and personal experience growing up in poverty.
“For me, this is about giving back. I know what it means to study on an empty stomach. If I could rise from that same poverty, then every child deserves the same chance without hunger standing in their way,” she said.
Chidzuga said the programme is designed not only to provide food but also to restore dignity and feed hope among young learners in rural and urban areas.
She said many children in remote parts of Kinango, Matuga, Msambweni, Lunga Lunga and Samburu still miss classes due to hunger and poverty, which continue to hinder educational progress in the county.
“No child should have to choose between hunger and education. This programme is about giving hope,” Chidzuga said.
She said the feeding initiative would help reduce absenteeism and school dropouts during the examination period, complementing ongoing county efforts such as the Kwale bursary programme that has already improved access to education.
“Providing meals during exams ensures every student sits their papers in a conducive environment and relieves pressure on parents, some of whom are forced to sell livestock to feed their children,” Chidzuga said.
She praised the collaboration between the national and county governments, urging teachers, parents and local leaders to support the programme’s success.
“I know rice and beans are not enough, but I kindly urge schools to play their part in ensuring this programme succeeds,” Chidzuga said.
She emphasised that education and nutrition must go hand in hand, noting that investing in both is key to unlocking the potential of every learner in Kwale.
