The murder of influencer Albert Ojwang has brought out the opposition in Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, who has been silent on his political moves lately.
However, he has come out guns blazing, attacking the Kenya Kwanza regime, perhaps signalling an intention to join the United Opposition, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
This came barely two days after the Gachagua-led opposition outfit publicly wooed Ali, while on a tour of Mombasa.
“You have been greeted by a young man called Jicho Pevu. Do you know Jicho Pevu? He has said he is on his way. He will join us like the other ones. He is the only MP elected on a UDA ticket in Nyali. He will join the team and he asked us to bring his greetings,” Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka said in Changamwe on Saturday.
Gachagua said his team will field a governor candidate in Mombasa.
“People of Mombasa, we will look for a governor from our side, whom we will support,” the DCP leader said.
On Tuesday, Ali called out the Kenya Kwanza regime, saying it has sunk to uncouth levels and ”the lies do not add up and the story does not stick”.
This followed the postmortem revelation that Ojwang died from head Injuries, neck compression and multiple soft tissue trauma pointing to torture and murder. This ruled out the National Police Service’s account of self-inflicted injuries.
“As a leader in this country and a former investigative journalist who sought to bring the truth and justice to my fellow Kenyans, nothing is clearer to me today than the depths of depravity we have sunk in as a country,” Ali posted on his social media accounts.
He said Ojwang is among the many young Kenyans who exercised their right to free speech only to pay the ultimate price - death.
Kenyan youth, Ali said, should not live in constant fear for their lives because of digital activism and joined the bandwagon of leaders calling for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.
“This is not the Kenya we envision for ourselves or our children. Justice must be served and DIG Lagat must resign immediately as he is a person of interest and prime suspect number one,” he posted.
The Nyali MP has been a lone ranger in Mombasa politics.
He was allied to Gachagua before the ex-DP’s impeachment.
But he seemed to have abandoned Gachagua at the last minute when he posted a photo of President William Ruto, hours before the impeachment, and said he has to align with the party’s wishes.
Days to the UDA grassroots elections in Mombasa, Ali threatened and made good his threat to withdraw his allies from the polls.
He has not been seeing eye-to-eye with UDA secretary general Hassan Omar, as the two read from different scripts all the time.
Both are said to be eyeing the Mombasa governor seat.
Recently, Ali seems to be warming up to Gachagua once again, with a recent photo of the two together going viral.
It remains to be seen whether Ali will publicly announce his allegiance to Gachagua's team or he will continue keeping his opponents guessing.
