Supporters of Nominated Senator Miraj Abdillahi will remain in the dark a little longer as she continues to hold her political cards close to her chest.

The senator has been giving mixed signals, causing supporters to guess her next move.

While some believe she is eying the Likoni MP seat, owing to the many activities she does in the constituency, others say her dream is the Mombasa Woman Rep seat.

ODM’s Mishi Mboko is currently Likoni MP.

There is also the likelihood she will go for the Senate position, as she has also organised activities in different parts of the county, signalling a broader constituency of voters other than just those in Likoni.

On Monday, Abdillahi indicated the wait will be longer and asked supporters to stay calm, saying she will reveal the seat she is eyeing soon.

“We have not announced whether it is a boy or a girl. The baby is still in the womb. If it comes out a boy, we will slaughter two he-goats. If it comes out a girl, we will slaughter one she-goat,” the senator said during a women and youth empowerment programme at Tononoka Hall.

“Everyone is putting in their key. Miraj here, Miraj there. But we are still the same people and we will still be here. Ours is to pray and let Allah do the rest,” she added.

Abdillahi said she would “listen to what her elders” before making a decision, hinting that she is waiting on her mentor, President William Ruto, to give her the green light to go full scale on the seat she will be contesting.

“I went round looking for the MCA seat in Tononoka, but I did not get it. I also went round looking for the Woman Representative seat twice, but I did not get it. But William Samoei Ruto saw me and lifted me up.”

“And at all times, the ear does not exceed the head. We are waiting for William Samoei Ruto to call us and tell us, Miraj, it is now time, go! Like he gifted me this seat, I know there are good things ahead for Mombasa people,” she said.

Former Gender CS Aisha Jumwa, who was the chief guest at the event, advised her not to contest the Likoni seat because a woman is already at the helm.

“Miraj, my sister, let the Likoni seat be. I will fully support you for any other seat. They say we do not have money. But I have money and will fully back you,” Jumwa said.

The former CS said Kenya needs more women in elected positions.

“We need more representation of women in the National Assembly, Senate and county governments. If women fight for one seat, we will divide our votes and lose the seats.

Kwale Woman Rep Fatuma Masito said Abdillahi is suited for any seat because she has already shown her leadership qualities.

Masito said women should support and not fight each other, adding that the more women in leadership positions, the better Kenya will be.

“We as women from the Coast asked President Ruto to empower more of our Coast women and we saw it happen.

“This is our journey that we have started here at Tononoka Hall. We are united as women leaders from the Coast and this unity, despite our different political parties, will move us forward,” she said.
