Kwale Police are investigating a case of an unknown woman who threw an infant in a well shortly after giving birth at Mwangwei village in Lunga-Lunga sub-county.

The infant was found dead with his umbilical cord still intact. It was a baby boy.

The incident happened at around 1630 hours.

According to the area Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Sawe, already one suspect has been arrested.

He said the well was full of water and by the time rescue arrived, the infant had already drowned.

"We have a case where a woman gave broth and decided to drown the child in well," he said.

Sawe condemned the act adding that law will take course.

The DCC advised women against animosity and to avoid killing innocent infants.

He said instead of harming the babies, the women feeling too overwhelmed to handle life stress should give the baby for adoption and seek help.

Sawe said the law doesn't allow killing regardless of the age.

"An infant is still a human being and it is against the law to end someone's life," he said.

The local administrator urged youth to shun engaging in premature sexual activities to curb unplanned pregnancies and babies and concentrate on their studies.

He said teen pregnancies are one of the main contributors to such hostile incidents.

He, however, said those who are already affected should never attempt to kill the infants because the law will catch up with them.

The infant's body was taken to Msambweni's referral mortuary for postmortem.

In a separate incident in Msambeni, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl succumbed to fire injuries behind Leisure Lodge in Diani.

The girl was sleeping during the fire incident.

She was rescued by the members of the public and rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

Police are yet to establish the cause of the fire.
