Details have emerged regarding the arrest of the main suspect in the murder investigation of Nairobi Hospital's Acting Finance Director Eric Maigo, on Tuesday night.

Police revealed that the suspect, a minor believed to be between 15 to 17 years old, had been on the run for the past two weeks but was apprehended at her friend’s house in the slum.

She had returned to the house at around 7 pm, seeking shelter for the night.

Police received information that the suspect had been spotted in various locations, including the Cemetery area, and the Olympics, and had attempted to reach the Show Ground in the Jamhuri area.

Later, she made her way to her friend’s house, where her presence was reported to mother, prompting police action.

The police had been monitoring phone calls of those close to the girl to gather leads for the investigation.

The arrest was part of an intelligence-led operation conducted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), with a combined team from Kilimani sub-county and DCI headquarters.

Police had been deployed heavily in the area and slum in general over the ongoing Nairobi International Trade Fair in Jamhuri Grounds.

She is currently detained at Muthaiga Police Station, awaiting transfer to Kilimani Police Station, which is handling the case.

Her arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday, during which police will request additional time for holding her as they plan to conduct various tests before determining the charges.

Thus far, the police have recorded statements from 12 individuals, including colleagues of the deceased at the hospital, witnesses who saw the suspect escape from the crime scene, her mother, and three friends.

Notably, the teenage suspect had healing injuries on her belly, which resulted from a fall she experienced on a razor wire fence at the scene of the crime on September 15.

Police on Sunday said the teenager was missed by a whisker after she left a house she had spent overnight in the Olympic area.

The detectives combed parts of Kibera slums and traced friends and relatives as they tried to understand her background before she was arrested.

They also went to various health facilities in an effort to find out if she sought any medical help after she was captured on camera falling on sharp razors forming part of a war around where Maigo lived as she escaped the scene.

How the suspected escaped from the scene

Maigo was found dead in his house at Woodley Annexe on the morning of September 15, having been stabbed 25 times.

Two blood-stained knives believed to have been the murder weapons were recovered from the scene of the crime.

Detectives on Friday, September 22, recovered clothes believed to have been worn by the main suspect during the murder. They also unraveled how the suspect escaped from the scene.

The clothes, a red-checkered shirt and a grey pair of animal-print pants were found in a semi-permanent wooden shack in Bombolulu village, deep inside the sprawling Kibera slums.

The CCTV footage shows that the suspect likely suffered serious cuts on her body, particularly the stomach and hands, as she struggled to detangle herself from the razor wire fence circumvented atop the perimeter wall.

She was seen on the CCTV camera at a different compound from the victim's at 6.29 am and attempted to go over the fence by stepping on a water tank.

For about two minutes, she remained motionless and appeared to be sucking her left-hand thump continuously.

She then waved at someone inside the compound then peeped over the face and appeared to be talking to someone on the outside whilst her left leg remained stretched on top of the perimeter wall.

After a few seconds of trying to get over the wall, she seemingly abandoned the idea, climbed down and headed to the main gate.

She returned almost immediately and waved at a woman seen busying herself inside the house's kitchen after she found the gate locked.

For several minutes, she was seen engaging in a conversation with a lady who emerged from the compound's servant's quarter while repeatedly using gestures with her right hand.

Her left hand remained in her jumper's pocket all the while, intermittently taking it out for split seconds.

The lady in the kitchen peeped through the window after she apparently noticed the resident tenant talking to someone close to the house.

The lady from the servant quarter then moved closer and appeared to be dissuading the suspect from going over the razor fence. The lady in the house has at this point moved to the kitchen veranda.

Their pleas seemingly fell on deaf ears as the suspect stood on top of the perimeter wall, razor wire fence notwithstanding, ready to jump.

Her initial attempt failed and she fell tummy first on the razor wire and metal spikes cemented on top of the perimeter wall as the two ladies watched.

After a short struggle, she managed to detangle her left leg from the razor wire fence, positioned herself then jumped and disappeared from the camera frame at 6.37am.

A different CCTV camera captured her taking sandals from the front door of a different house and heading straight to the main gate of the estate in haste.

A schoolchild is seen following her as she exits.

The watchman told Citizen TV he did not question her as he assumed she was a house help who was taking the child to a school bus that had just pulled up outside the compound.

Maigo's Burial

Maigo will be buried at his Keumbu, Kisii rural home on September 29.
