The newly elected Coast Parliamentary Group chairperson Danson Mwashako has promised to lead the bloc into a formidable group that will contribute to the socio-economic transformation of the region.

The Wundanyi MP said he is determined to unite the legislators to work towards common development goals despite different political affiliations.

Mwashako, who was elected to stir up the team a fortnight ago, said he has great potential to contribute to the county's development agenda.

He said the CPG will focus on economic and political unity.

"My first task is to make sure that we speak with one voice as legislators. Time has come for the region to make strong development strides," Mwashako said in an interview on Sunday.

He said the bloc will be more united and stronger.

Mwashako said he will embark on a regional sensitisation campaign to solidify the bloc.

The second-term legislator will be deputised by Kilifi Woman Representative Getrude Mbeyu, while Matuga's Kassim Tandaza was elected secretary general. Tandaza will be deputised by Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi.

Other officials of the bloc are Tana River Woman Rep Abdullahi Amina (treasurer), Lamu Senator Joseph Githuku (vice treasurer) and Lamu Woman Rep Ruweida Mohamed who will lead the region's women caucus.

Others are CPG whip Ken Chonga (Kilifi South), organising secretary Ali Wario (Garsen) and his Mvita counterpart Machele Mohammed who will be the deputy organizing secretary.

National Assembly's Deputy Majority leader and Kilifi North legislator Owen Baya will be the caucus patron.

The parliamentary caucus brings together 42 MPs including senators of the six coastal counties Taita Taveta, Lamu, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Kwale.

Since inception in 2013, the CPG has been led by Gideon Mung'aro 2013-17 when he served as Malindi MP, the late Mohammed Dori then MP Msambweni 2017-19 and Galole MP Said Hiribae, who led the team from 2019-23.

Further, Mwashako warned those hell-bent on propagating divisive politics that the region will rise up to make key decisions in the 2027 general election.

"Before the 2027 election, the region will have a strong political bargaining power. This will in turn help us rally for development projects for our region," Mwashako said.

The Wiper MP said members of the CPG have agreed to put aside their political affiliations and speak in unison on behalf of the coastal communities.
