Three people died on Monday night after the tuk-tuk they were in collided with a lorry at Kwakazuri along the Kilifi-Malindi highway.

Three other people in the tuk-tuk are admitted to the Kilifi County referral hospital. Two are in critical condition.

Kilifi North Sub-county police commander Kenneth Maina said two people, including the driver of the tuk-tuk, died on the spot while the third person succumbed while receiving treatment at the Kilifi County Referral Hospital.

Two of the deceased are relatives.

“The tuk-tuk was overloaded and was heading towards Tezo from Kilifi. It had six people, including the driver. The tuk-tuk driver was overtaking a trailer and collided head-on with the lorry," he said.

He said the accident occurred at around 10 pm.

Fredrick Kadzo, a resident, lost two relatives in the accident.

According to Kadzo, his relatives Edgar Kadzo and Kilian Chiro are both tuk-tuk drivers.

“Edgar is my brother and Chiro is my nephew. They are all tuk-tuk drivers and they were on their way home when the accident happened," he said.

"They had picked up passengers in Kilifi and they were to drop them in Tezo and then proceed home. I talked to them in the evening and at around 10:30 pm, I received the news of their demise. It is painful to lose two relatives at the same time.”

The bodies were moved to the Kilifi county hospital funeral home awaiting postmortem.
