Kenyan drivers have been urged to go for eye checkups at least once a year to ensure safety on the roads.
Mombasa's Optometrists Association of Kenya representative Dr Andalama Sofia said at least 20 accidents are caused by drivers with visual challenges.
However, she said cases have reduced because of the efforts and measures put in place to create more awareness.
"When you drive it is not just about you but also those around you. That is why it is important for drivers to get their eyes checked," she said.
She spoke during World Sight Day which is commemorated to raise awareness on eye health and road safety.
“World Sight Day is important to the public especially drivers because it helps to create more awareness about blindness, vision impairment and vision care around the globe," she said.
"This year we are offering free eye clinic to drivers across the country because eyesight is important to ensure road safety and avoid traffic injuries."
She said that drivers need to have yearly eye checkups, blood sugar and blood pressure.
"We are offering free eye screening to drivers and those with weak eyesight will be given free spectacles along with counselling on regular eye checkups. Those who would require surgery will be referred to the Aga Khan Hospital for further treatment," Sofia said.
Sofia has urged drivers who have not been screened to take the matter seriously and visit any hospital so to ensure their vision is good.
Out of the 300 targeted drivers, only 150 were screened and 64 were found with visual challenges.
"We also provided 40 people with reading glasses as others were given sunglasses. Around 15 people did not receive the glasses but we will ensure they get them," she said.
Dominic Mutinda, a driver, said eye checkups are essential since they are exposed to brighter lights when driving at night, something which affects their eyesight.
"We came out in large numbers as Mombasa drivers to be screened because it is important for us to know our health," he said.
"However, our company also has an eye check up schedule for all drivers who go for a check-up after every three days."
