Religious leaders in Kwale have promised to support Governor Fatuma Achani's leadership.

This is after a long push and pull by some of the religious leaders and community elders who opposed women's leadership.

For years, Kwale has been a conservative region where women's leadership is not fully accepted.

During the campaign, Achani and former Governor Salim Mvurya had a hard time convincing residents to support her candidature for the county top seat.

On Tuesday, various religious leaders, under the umbrella of the Kwale Advisory Religious Council, and elders visited Achani in Kwale headquarters to appreciate and acknowledge her victory. They promised to work with her.

They also conducted special prayers for Achani and her deputy Chirema Kombo to guide and protect them against evil eyes.

Those who visited Achani comprised of sheikhs, pastors and Kaya elders from various communities.

Council's chairman Hamisi Mwachirumu said they will support Achani's administration and help her deliver on her promises to the Kwale people.

"We congratulate you on your victory and you can count on us," he said.

Mwachirumu hailed President William Ruto for recognising women leadership and coastal leaders in his government.

He said the appointment of coastal people to Cabinet and other government positions promotes inclusivity in national development.

"We extend our sincere gratitude to the President for appointing Aisha Jumwa and Salim Mvurya as Cabinet secretaries," he said.

Jumwa was appointed as CS for Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action and Mvurya (Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs).

Mvurya served as Kwale governor for two consecutive terms while Jumwa was an MP in Malindi, Kilifi county.

Mwachirumu also hailed Mvurya for standing with Achani and making sure women were given equal opportunities in leadership.

He said religious leaders will promote and protect women's rights and their leadership.

The sheikh thanked Kenyans for conducting peaceful elections.

Achani assured religious leaders of respect and dignity.

She said her administration will recognise and respect diverse religions.

The governor said she will lead fairly as per the law and respect the teachings of all the holy books.

"I appreciate your generosity and I give you my word that I will continue to respect everyone regardless of their political, religious beliefs or tribal differences," she said.

Achani said her administration will work closely with the clergy in transforming the county's development and improving the lives of residents.

She urged religious tolerance and unity for peaceful coexistence in the county.

Achani said disunity and violence impede development and slow the realisation of the county's goals.

She told religious leaders to be a pillar of unity and strength and not division.

The governor said people should choose peace no matter what and work together for prosperity.

Achani said the politics period is over and there is no time for vengeance but to unite and serve Kwale citizens.

"The political period is past us. The task ahead of us is greater than holding political grudges. We must work together," she said.

Achani has started visiting religious leaders, churches and mosques to thank them for their strong support, before, during and after the general election.
