Jomvu and Changamwe constituencies have recorded low voter turnout in the Mombasa governor elections held on Monday.

Monica Wambura, the presiding officer at Mikindani polling station, said that the turnout has been low since morning but the commission witnessed a slight increase of voters in the afternoon.

"We had a really low voter turnout in the morning where we registered less than 100 voters who showed up. But in the afternoon coming towards the rush hour, the number of voters started increasing and right now we have registered a total number of 210 as the day gets to end," she said.

She said that the day has been slow for the IEBC officials compared to general elections.

"At Mikindani polling station which, has a number of 9 streams with 621 registered voters for each stream, so far at least 210 to 215 voters have showed up," she said.

A section of voters who reported at the polling centre past the directed voting time did not get a chance of casting their votes.

Mary Kadzo, a resident said that she reported to her work knowing that she will cast her vote in the evening but upon reaching the polling centre, the exercise had been closed.

"I went to open my business in the morning knowing that I will cast my vote in the evening. When I came I found out that I do not have my ID card so I decided to go for it but it took me longer because I had a young child, upon coming back, the station had been closed," she said.

At Chaani Social Hall in the Jomvu constituency, the same case was experienced where some of the voters who came in late were locked out of the polling station.

Robert Mwema, a resident said that he arrived at the Station late because he stays far from the station.

"I used to stay in Changamwe but relocated to Mtwapa which is a bit far from Changamwe so I could not make it to arrive at the centre to cast vote on time. I arrived here 10 minutes late so my effort to vote went in vain," he said.
