Muslim leaders in Jomvu have called for peace and toning down of political battles during the holy month of Ramadhan.

Speaking during the opening of the Jamia Mosque Mikindani on Friday, Jomvu MP Badi Twalib said this Ramadhan may easily be the toughest for Muslims because of the increasing cost of living and the imminent August 9 General Election.

“Our unity as Muslims is crucial. I urge us all to unite and move as one people. Politics is a seasonal thing but religion will remain constant,” Twalib said.

The MP, who is the patron of the 2,500-capacity mosque, said it is a Ramadhan gift to all Muslims in Jomvu.

He called on Muslim political leaders to exercise restraint in their political talks as they campaign for different political seats.

“We know there has been a ruling on BBI and we respect the court’s decision. Let that not be an issue to cause political attacks among leaders on the different sides of the political divide,” Twalib said.

He said BBI was a genuine matter with good intentions for Kenyans thus it will be revisited.

“Through the BBI, we were to get additional constituencies and additional funds to the grassroots.”

Ahmed Jamal, a Muslim cleric, said the mosque should be a blessing to all Muslims in Jomvu and other parts of the county.

“We should use it to the fullest.”

However, he called on security agents to ensure there is security as Muslims will be spending night in the mosque for taraweeh prayers.

Taraweeh, which means rest or relaxation, is observed after breaking the fast at around 9pm and may go up to 11pm.

It is believed that those who observe the optional prayer throughout Ramadan, out of sincerity of faith and in the hope of earning reward, will have his past sins pardoned.

Twalib called on Mombasa Water and Sanitation Company and Kenya Power company to ensure constant supply of water and electricity throughout Ramadhan.

“These are small things but may be significant in people’s lives,” he said.

The MP said Muslims worked in unity to ensure the successful completion of the mosque and the same unity should be shown in the everyday lives.

Twalib said the mosque was funded by Salim Ahmed Taib Bajaber and Governor Hassan Joho waived all the land rates payable to the county for the mosque.

Hakika Transporters’ Jamal Jamal has offered to maintain the mosque.
