NGOs have started campaigns to boost Covid-19 vaccine uptake in Homa Bay county.
Centre for International Health Education and Bio-security (Ciheb)-Kenya, Amref and Kenya Red Cross have partnered with the county health department to sensitise residents on the importance of being vaccinated.
Records from the county health department indicate that 32,207 people have so far received the first dose while 10,429 people have been fully vaccinated.
The county government targets to vaccinate 650,000 people.
Ciheb training and capacity building coordinator Jemimah Kibira said on Wednesday they had realised that a number of people who received their first dose of the vaccine were reluctant to go for the second one.
“There are many people who received the first dose, but they have not gone for the second dose. That is why we have come out to mobilise people to go for the vaccine,” Kibira said.
She spoke to journalists when they launched the sensitisation programme.
“All we are saying is that the vaccination reduces severity of the disease in case of an attack. Let people go for it,” Kibira said.
Homa Bay county vaccination coordinator Christine Auma told residents to avoid myths perpetrated against vaccination.
Other officials present included Peter Owaga and Kadison Edison.
“We want residents to avoid any myths about vaccination. The vaccines are safe,” Auma said.
She said they have enough AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines.
“The vaccines are adequate and we want people to come for them,” Auma said.
