The Mvita NG-CDF will construct a girls' secondary school and name in after Mekatilili wa Menza in honour of the heroine.
MP Abdulswammad Nassir said Mekatilili wa Menza girls secondary school will be constructed within Tudor area.
The school will honour the Mijikenda pre-independence activist, who led the Giriama community against the British colonial administration in Kenya between 1912 and 1915.
“In the coming weeks, we shall have a ground breaking ceremony for the school in Tudor.
"The school is in honour of the coastal heroine. I could have chosen to name the school after me, but we have other great people in this region,” Nassir said.
The MP spoke at Kikowani Primary School on Wednesday during the issuance of bursaries.
Nassir has previously come under criticism for not putting up any school within the region.
But the MP said he chose not to build new schools so that all the existing schools within the constituency could be upgraded and rehabilitated.
He also said the value of land within Mvita is very expensive.
“Some people have been complaining why we are not building new schools. What is the essence of putting up new schools, whereas the existing ones are in bad state?
"I’m now living behind a legacy that shows that we have renovated all our schools before building up new ones,” the MP said.
Mvita has the highest number of public primary and secondary schools in Mombasa.
Nassir said they noted an increase in the uptake of students after the renovation of some of the schools, which were in very bad condition.
“For example, we have noted an increased number of students at Majengo and Mbeheni primary schools. We have given our learners a good environment to learn,” he said.
Currently, Nassir said they have an ongoing project to dig boreholes and install desalination machines in all schools within Mvita constituency.
“Our children will now have clean drinking water. That is what I’m proud to leave behind,” said the MP, who is eyeing the Mombasa governor seat.
