The Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers, Kilifi, will market the county as a preferred tourist destination for the December holidays.
KAHKC Kilifi chairman Philip Chai said the region will get more bookings due to the calm experienced during the electioneering period.
Speaking to the Star, Chai said the marketing will start after the President is sworn in on Tuesday next week.
“Coast remained calm all through the court process and we are banking on that as our strategy. I want to thank people for making sure there are no ugly scenes that would hurt the fragile sector,” he said.
Chai, however, said the number of domestic tourists may drop due to chaos experienced upcountry. “We understand that businesses were greatly affected upcountry where most domestic tourists come from, but we still hope they will come for holiday,” he said.
Kilifi Mada Hotels manager Peter Njoroge said the introduction of the inter-counties SGR train is a major boost to the industry. Njoroge said the two hotels under Mada hotels in Kilifi — Baobab Sea Lodge and Kilifi Bay Beach Resort — are currently operating at slightly above 40 per cent capacity.
