THE Mombasa Water Supply and Sanitation Company has released a list of 270 residents with arrears dating back to 2013.

This follows an acute water shortage that has affected more than one million Coast residents.

Prominent individuals and parastatals feature on the list including the Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Revenue Authority, police stations, the Anti-Terror Police Unit, schools, churches and prisons.

Companies owned by former MP Ramadhan Kajembe, politician Karisa Nzai are also on the list.

Kenya USC Ltd Mombasa tops the list with Sh4million arrears, followed by the Changamwe police station with a Sh2million debt.

The water firm published the list after the Coast Water Services Board disconnected supply.

The company owes CWSB Sh600 million.

Consultations were held last week and governors struck a deal to resolve the matter.

On Friday, water begun trickling in parts of Mombasa though pressure was low and some areas still experienced had no water.

Hotels affected by the water interruption said they will sue MAWSACO.

Two weeks ago, President Uhuru Kenyatta unveiled a Sh572 million water project at the Baricho water works.

The project will be completed in June next year.

It is expected to increase supply to 112 million litres from the current 90 million litres.

The President said the additional 22 million litres will address water shortages in Mombasa, Malindi, Kilifi and Watamu towns.
