Two Nairobi county askaris linked to the killing of hawkers will remain in custody until tomorrow, when they are likely to be charged with murder.
Alfred Ogesi, alias Brown, and Julius Ochieng appeared in court yesterday but were not required to plead to the charges.
Assistant director of public prosecutions Duncan Ondimu told the court police needed a day to complete investigations.
“They are providing crucial information that may lead to the arrest of suspects who are still at large,” he said.
The lawyer said an identification parade is yet to be conducted for witnesses who have recorded statements.
They held at Kamukunji police station.
He said the investigating officer is yet to take the suspects for psychiatric assessment to determine whether they are fit to stand trial.
Ondimu told resident magistrate Joyce Gandanyi the two are likely to be charged with murder.
A third suspect, Protus Sakala, appeared in court last Friday and will be charged alongside the two.
The three askaris were arrested following complaints from Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko.
Sonko, who offered a Sh100,000 reward for information about them, threatened to resign if authorities failed to take action against rogue city county askaris.
Last Thursday, he said harassment of hawkers by the askaris should be punished.
He said in the past 12 months, 19 hawkers have lost their lives.
There has been a bad blood between the hawkers and the askaris.
The askaris have been driving the hawkers out of the central business district and Ngara.
