There was a political showdown in Kilifi town on Monday between Governor Amason Kingi and his rival Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro when the two met at a fundraising.

Mung’aro wants to run for governor in 2017.

Kingi was the chief guest at the Maendeleo ya Wanawake funds drive.

He was welcomed by women wearing traditional regalia and his supporters who carried placards and twigs singing “Kingi tosha”.

There was jubilation and dance as hundreds of women ushered in the governor and led him to the podium.

Before the dust could settle, Mung’aro made a triumphal entry with hundreds of supporters singing “Mung’aro tosha 2017 governor”, bringing the fundraiser to a standstill.

All eyes turned to Mung’aro as he walked to the podium.

It was the first time Kingi and Mung’aro attended the same public forum since the Kilifi North MP declared interest in running for governor in 2017.

A jovial Mung’aro greeted Kingi and sat next to him.

At times they chatted briefly then each would face the other side.

At one point, Kingi’s supporters got into trouble after they folded their placards moments after Mung’aro arrived, forcing the governor’s ‘men’ to question why they were not displaying them.

Later, Mung’aro’s supporters came in groups with fresh placards saying ‘Mung’aro governor Kilifi 2017’.

The governor’s supporters, led by his ‘men’, regrouped and came to the ground in a procession holding the placards and praising Kingi for his development record.
