THE Ministry of Lands has introduced a new digital land record's system at the Coast lands office. Operations at lands offices in Mombasa, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Lamu and Kwale counties will be digitised according to a notice from the ministry.

Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu the digital record system replaces the manual system to avoid manipulation and loss of records. "The use of the digital record is provided for under section 9 and 10 of the Land registration Act number 3 of 2012.It is also in line with the ministry’s policy of digitization of all land records," she said in the notice.

The notice identifies names of officers authorised to handle land transactions using the digital land records. They are John Wanjohi (Mombasa), Anthony Karani (Kilifi), Ronald Mwakio (Taita Taveta), Ben Mwaganda (Lamu) Evans Marwanga (Kwale).

“My ministry’s target in the next four years is to ensure that 3 million Kenyans who may own a piece of land will have it surveyed, registered and a title deed issued. Tthis is just the beginning of this process,” Ngilu said.

The notice comes barerly two months after President Uhuru Kenyatta issued 60,000 title deeds to Coast residents. President Uhuru gave 3,406 titles to Mombasa residents, 18,000 title to Kilifi, 14,000 titles to Kwale residents and 19,105 title deeds for Taita Taveta residents as part of the 60,000 title deeds.

The president is expected to further camp at the Coast next month (December) for two weeks for a second round of title deed issuance. According to Uhuru’s political advisor Joshua Kutuny, the presidents will towards the end of December tour Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Malindi, Lamu, and other areas where he will issue title deeds.

This comes as Cord leaders continue to criticize the Jubilee government for using title deeds to woo coast people who massively supported cord in the March 4, general.

Last Saturday, cord principle former Prime Minister Raila Odinga cautioned Coast residents against being lured with title deeds by the Jubilee government.
