The former ruling party Kanu has asked leaders in Mt Kenya to suspend political rallies that might divide the region.

Former county chairman David Mbiu dismissed the Limuru III meeting that happened last Friday, saying it was aimed at criticising the Kenya Kwanza government.

Mbiu said it was wrong to attack Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua alleging that he had neglected the region.

He added that both President William Ruto and his deputy deserve respect.

"It is not wrong to hold such a meeting, but we are asking ourselves whether its aim was to criticise the DP or to unite our people," he said.

Mbiu urged local leaders to accept that Gachagua is the only leader from Mt Kenya holding the senior-most office in government, asking them to support him.

He asked leaders in Mt Kenya to play their politics with caution so as not to scatter the region's voting pattern since it's guided by its big population.

He said Limuru III promoted some leaders such as Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua and Jeremiah Kioni to appear like they want to compete with the DP.

“Gachagua has a lot of supporters who will die with him, while another group tries to lobby for support for another entity. This would result in splitting our unity, which is very unfortunate,” he said.

"We must protect our voting pattern. We shape this country's politics with votes. If we scatter them, we will not be able to negotiate well in future governments."

He spoke during the party's delegates breakfast meeting in Limuru town on Tuesday.

It was attended by the county’s Kanu secretary Karanja Sakina and former Ndeiya councillor Ndung'u Njenga.

Sakina asked Ruto to defend his deputy from political attacks by some UDA politicians and the opposition.

Sakina said Ruto was a symbol of national unity and his office deserved respect.

He said if the current politics in Central region continues, some leaders might stay divided and end up dividing Mt Kenya unity that may result in failing to lobby for development for the region.

“The 2027 election campaigns have started early. They might leave this place undeveloped. We need to be united. When Rigathi is fought politically to an extent even the President is affected,” Sakina said.

“It is the duty of the President to control his UDA politicians and especially the MPs and MCAs from attacking Rigathi. By doing so, they will protect the numbers of MPs their party will have in the next Parliament and will strengthen the ruling party and assure unity.”
