Mount Kenya University senior officials last week led more than hundreds of  lawyers in participating in the Wakili golf tournament at the Machakos golf club.

At the amateur golf event, the university showcased its online Masters of Law programme, which it noted, offered practicing lawyers flexibility to pursue postgraduate studies.

MKU Vice Chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi said the university offers students an opportunity to balance academics with extracurricular activities including sports.

“At Mount Kenya University, we pride ourselves not only in our commitment to sporting excellence but also in our dedication to providing innovative educational opportunities,” he said.

“I am delighted to share with you today about our unique Masters of Law programme, which is delivered online and is self-paced. This programme offers flexibility and accessibility, allowing individuals to pursue advanced legal studies while balancing their professional and personal commitments. With our upcoming intake in September, we look forward to welcoming a new cohort of students eager to embark on this transformative educational journey.”

He noted that the MKU’s Law School had emerged as one of the fastest growing and most reputable law schools in the country.

“In recent education rankings, Mount Kenya University has risen to the top seven universities in Kenya and second best private university in the country, a testament to the dedication and expertise of our faculty, staff, and students,” he said.

“We are committed to providing world-class legal education that prepares graduates to excel in their careers and make meaningful contributions to society.”

MKU Council chairman Dr Vincent Gaitho who participated in the golf tournament, said playing in any sport helps one to relax and even improve their productivity at work.

He added that the Wakili Golf Day had given the university and its former students a platform to engage as they both sought to enhance legal training in the country.

Dr Gaitho said the university had invested heavily in distance learning, which would make it easier for law students to access such programmes as the online Masters of Law programme that the university launched last year.

Dr Wilfred Mutubwa dean MKU School of Law, noted that the online programme offered lawyers the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies while still continuing to manage their legal practices.

“To the practicing lawyers, we have a programme for you, the busy lawyer who wants to join class from the Hague, Johannesburg, join class from Mwingi or Mombasa, and study at the top law school in Kenya, we offer flexible open distance education in law and you will have completed your studies within two years or four semesters, at a cost effective rate,” he said.

Consolata Maitha Lecturer at the university and captain of the MKU Golf team, said the institution through such initiatives as the Campus Golf Club, aimed at giving an all round experience to students while they are pursuing their studies.

“Wakili Golf is an exceptional event that brings lawyers and their friends together for out-of-court experience,” she said.

“MKU- School of Law through the dean and supported by the university has established a campus golf club which gives the students the experience of law in class and experience with lawyers on the course. This brings information about our programmes and the benefits to people of interest. We hope to grow in it and have an MKU golf  tournament in the near future.
