Parents in Lari, Kiambu county have urged public day secondary schools to reduce the amount of school fees.

The parents want the money reviewed following the release of the capitation funds.

The school fees cater for the feeding programme and payment of non-teaching staff.

“Paying more than Sh 4,000 per month in a school and your has been given capitation by the government is too much. The money charged need to be reviewed," Simon Njoroge, a parent, said.

Lari MP Mburu Kahangara also called for the auditing of the public schools' financials.

"A school that has 800 students makes Sh3.2 million per term and when you add the government's capitation, the money becomes too much. We need an audit to know what is happening” he said.

Kahangara who spoke during the issuance of bursaries, said he will not issue day school cheques until the schools' boards lower school fees.

He was accompanied by Kiambu Woman Representative Ann Muratha and MP’s Githua Wamacukuru (Kabete), Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika),  John Njuguna (Kiambaa) and John Kiragu (Limuru).

“We need to sit down and reason together since the schools have become a cash cow in the name of paying additional teachers, sustaining feeding programmes, buying stationaries and paying subordinate staffs ” he said.

The government on Wednesday released the second batch of of Sh30.5 billion secondary school capitation funds.

The capitation per learner is Sh22,444 per year.

Wamacukuru said in Kabete, day school students pay Sh1,000 per term and the money is enough to meet school needs.

Muratha urged school heads to hold talks with the parents on how the matter can be addressed.

The Education Committee member said parents need to be supported by all means.

“The government wants to see students in school hence the reelease of the capitation. Kindly sit down and talk,” she said.

Parents Association chairman Samuel Wanjema said it was wrong for parents to pay such an amount when there is capitation.

He urged school heads and their  BOM’s to include the association in the talks for a proper analysis of the expenditure.

“Parents need to be well informed on what is being charged,” Wanjema said.
