Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire on Tuesday flagged off Sh19 million drugs and non-pharmaceuticals to Embu Level 5 Hospital.

Among the drugs from Kemsa were antibiotics, X-ray equipment, chronic diseases drugs and other non-pharmaceuticals.

The governor said level 4 and level 3 hospitals will receive drugs and non-pharmaceuticals within the next one and two days respectfully.

Mbarire warned staff against stealing drugs from public hospitals, saying they will be dealt with accordingly.

"We are going to change a lot of systems to ensure we deliver on our promises to residents by improving the health sector," she said.

The former MP said the health system within the county will improve accountability to ensure the continued availability of drugs.

Embu Deputy Governor Justus Kinyua said the government is committed to improving the health sector.

He said they will not allow anyone to steal drugs or medical equipment.

Health executive Nicholas Kunga applauded the governor for her efforts to improve the health sector.

He said a task force set up recently to come up with proposals and long-term solutions aimed at reforming the ailing health sector is working hard to deliver. The task force has a mandate of one month.

"Well ensure to partake all the mandates as you've placed them with us," the CEC said.

Francis Kimani, the chairman of the task force, said the committee is grateful for the governor's efforts to improve the health sector in the county.

"We're grateful to receive the first batch of medicines as an emergency response to the already struggling health sector in the county," he said.

Kimani said accountability in the sector is a mandatory requirement.

"We have individualised the handling of commodities to realise our accountability goals," he said.

Embu county secretary Johnson Nyaga said the taskforce will not undermine staff responsibilities.

"The health sector in Embu was dead, come on board as you promised the electorate. We also warn those who have been misusing drugs and stealing that you'll be dealt with," he said.
