A 29-year-old construction worker died after a wall that was being demolished at Gitugi Girls High School fell on him.
William Mbuthia, a mason, died on Monday after the rubble hit him, killing him instantly.
Other workers were able to run to safety.
The workers were demolishing the kitchen walls to expand it when the incident occurred.
Mathioya subcounty police commander Pauline Mwangi said eight workers escaped unhurt.
“The school is in the process of expanding its kitchen and had contracted the workers for the project,” she said.
Mwangi said one side of the kitchen’s walls collapsed causing death.
She said all the workers had been accounted for.
However, she said, that had proper safety measures been observed, the death would have been avoided.
“All workers should have been on the safe side during the demolition of the wall. I want to ask people working on construction sites to prioritise their safety,” Mwangi said.
Mbuthia’s body was retrieved and taken to Murang’a County Referral Hospital for postmortem.
Mwangi said they will probe the incident.
The death comes months after six construction workers perished at Sun Star Resort in Gatanga after a building that was under construction collapsed.
