Kijabe Boys High School in Kiambu was on Monday closed indefinitely after a dormitory was destroyed by fire.

The fire, which started during breaktime, damaged belongings including uniforms, books and bedding for 40 students.

On September 26, three days before the end of first term, a fire destroyed a dormitory that was shared by Form 2 and Form 3 students.

The school was forced to close two days early.

During Monday's fire, the school's board of management was in a meeting in the boardroom when they heard students screaming.

Lari subcounty deputy police commander Charles Opondo and Kijabe assistant county commissioner Geraldine Barasa were called to assess the situation.

Opondo said no one was injured and the cause has not been established. “We cannot tell who started the fire, but we are investigating to know if it was an electric fault or a student. We shall dig deeper because this is too much,” the police boss told the Star on the phone.

Kiambu County Parents Association chairman Samuel Wanjema said the school’s BoM told the students that their parents will be informed on when they would report back.

“Form 1 will be told when to come and the same case applies to the other classes. They will report on different days,” he said.

Wanjema asked the school administration and parents to help the police investigate the incidents.

He said fire incidents have been witnessed in different schools, adding that it is time schools and parents sit down and find out what could be the reason behind it.

“We doubt that all these fires in different schools are caused by electric fault. There could be issues leading to students setting their schools ablaze such as indiscipline, drug abuse or other issues,” Wanjema said.
