SOLIDARITY: Students participate in the nine-kilometre walk in Nyeri town on Saturday to raise money for orphans’ education.

The Nyeri Catholic Archdiocese has started an Orphans Education Fund to pay school fees for needy and vulnerable children.

The initiative was launched on Saturday by Bishop Peter Kairo to fully sponsor orphans for their secondary school and university education.

The launch started with a nine-kilometre walk around Nyeri town and is targeting to raise Sh5 million.

Kairo flagged off the walk in which 1,000 students and well-wishers from Nyeri and Laikipia counties participated.

“This is one way of spreading love for one another. Let us join hands in educating these children. It’s good to share with the less unfortunate,” he said.

Nyeri archdiocese education secretary SK Kamondo said Sh4 million has already been raised.

The money has been put in the revolving fund, whose profits will be used to educate orphans.

“The walk is meant to raise the remaining Sh1 million... This will be an annual event so that each year we top up the funds. We are targeting to have a world free of illiteracy,” Kamondo said.

The church will start sponsoring those who will join form one this year.

They will be identified using the church structures.

Beneficiary Mark Endipo who scored 361 marks from Muthaiga Primary School in Nanyuki, praised the initiative, saying it will help him realise his dream of becoming a lawyer.
