It's a common story of putting off a plan due to its inconvenience. It’s that moment when we choose comfort over progress. To be fair, procrastination feels good when it happens. Putting off responsibility can give you a false sense of victory. Yes, everything isn’t urgent, but it’s wise to do things at the appropriate time. Furthermore, procrastination is deceptive for the following reasons.
Procrastination Can Blind You: When you procrastinate, you get instant relief because you don’t have to do a task immediately. Everything can be done tomorrow – and when tomorrow comes, it can be done tomorrow. Sadly, when you procrastinate habitually, you don’t enjoy the power of now. Why?
It is because procrastination can make you blind to your potential and creativity. Doing things now requires that you think and craft a plan on how to execute. The present disciplines your mind and makes you focus because you must work within a time limit. The power of now exposes you to structure, which, in turn, raises your creativity and problem-solving skills.
Procrastination Can Stop You: Once procrastination occurs, the mind tends to suspend the matter and move on to something else. Consequently, strategic thinking is momentarily paused because putting off tasks reduces or eliminates urgency. Strategic thinking seeks to maximise time – it means that every task designed to achieve your goal is time sensitive. For instance: if I’m training for Olympic gold, I can’t keep postponing my gym routine. If procrastination persists, it eventually stops you from reaching your goal.
Procrastination Can Hinder Collaboration: Putting off responsibility also reduces or eliminates the pressure of making connections or collaborating with people who can help you achieve your goal. You don’t have to call that contact now, or you can have the meeting tomorrow. And when tomorrow comes, you have a good excuse to postpone until next week. Meanwhile, you delay or miss out on opportunities that come with building relationships and connections because you don’t want to be inconvenienced. People are custodians of opportunities, and if you’re not proactive at strategically building networks, your dream may not happen.
