If you have tried to make your dream happen, you would agree that the process is challenging. Often, it feels like walking through a minefield. At different points, new challenges emerge, and as you overcome one, another takes its place. Successfully birthing an idea is a rollercoaster that few survive. It can be difficult and requires you to be mentally tough.

What does this mean? It means that you must learn to rule your mind. One of the reasons why people fail at achieving their dreams is the lack of mental anchor that they need to power through. These people eventually succumb to the pressures that their goals attract. Hence, the need to know how to hold your mind steady through the challenges on your path. Now, how do you build mental toughness? Here are three simple strategies.

Overcome Yourself: The late American basketball legend, Kobe Bryant, said that on the path to success: "The biggest battle that you have is with yourself." You will have to face many external battles, but the most excruciating fight is the war within you. So, it is vital to have a plan to win the voices of fear, pain, worry, emotional insecurities, etc., that scream in your head. Overcoming yourself is daily fighting thoughts such as: "You are not good enough," "You are a failure," "You won't make it." You must realise that the scariest battle is within you and seek good strategies that would help you to win.

Replace Negative Thoughts: "Be positive" is a cliché that we throw around in our attempt to encourage others. But in reality, we all know how difficult it can be to practice it. Beyond being positive, I suggest that you challenge negative thoughts and replace them. So that if the thought "you're not good enough" plagues you, investigate it. What does it mean? Where is the proof? Proceed to replace it with a positive thought: "I am good enough because I learn and improve daily."

Positive Self Talk: Often, people talk themselves into a state of defeat even before the battle starts; this does not support mental toughness. Learn to speak strength into your soul. Develop the habit of standing in front of the mirror and speaking positive words to yourself. The world may be full of darkness, but your world can be full of light. Constantly talk to yourself about your greatness, growing influence, and capacity; speak to yourself until you believe in the power of your design.
