BAT appoints Ken Gitonga to head Southern African markets

Prior to the appointment he has been the head of commercial for BAT East & Southern Africa.

British American Tobacco Head of Commercial, East and Southern Africa Ken Gitonga has left the role to take over a new position as General Manager for BAT Southern African Markets.

The 39 year-old Gitonga takes over the role effective February 01, 2024.

The world’s largest tobacco processor by sales, has in the recent past been restructuring its African business in wake of changing consumer trends.

Last year BAT expanded the scope of its Nairobi office to five Southern African markets in what it said was part of the global transformation of its business.

The added states were Malawi, Mozambique, Angola, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Despite his appointment onto the role, the region still falls under the control of the Nairobi office.

Gitonga is a seasoned professional having re-joined BAT Kenya in April 2017 as National Sales Manager and in 2018 he proceeded for an international assignment at the BAT Group office in London, UK.

In UK he took on the role of Trade Marketing Manager for the Americas and Sub-Sahara Africa region and subsequently, International Brand Manager for the Modern Oral Nicotine portfolio.

In April 2021, he moved to South Africa as Head of Activations for the East & Southern Africa Area and soon after, was appointed as the Head of Trade for East African Markets in February 2022.

“Ken has transformed the Company's route to consumer capabilities while maximising the revenue potential of the business, through robust people leadership,” the company said in statement.

He has been the head of commercial for BAT East & Southern Africa, based in Nairobi.
